From Rags to Riches!

From 15th to 4th, Canada brings back what they remember as they place 4th in the 2010 WCP Cup after finishing 15th place the previous two years.  The goal for Canada this year was just to make it out of their group stage.  After failing to complete that task the last two years this was a proud moment for the team.  The group stage was a close battle, after a serious draw against Botswana put Canada in position to not advance.  However, being the team they knew they were Canada came to yet another draw against the defending champions Republic of Ireland to seal their fate and advance to the quarter finals.

After completing tough games in the round robin matches Canada’s next big match would be against an undefeated Polish side.  Poland coming out of their group without a blemish made them a team to beat in the next round, as they have formed a solid team unity.  It looked good for Canada at the beginning but Poland did give up scoring twice to equalize.  This game would be decided in extra time golden goal, where Ahmed slammed the door shut on the Polish side sending them to golf courses and Canada to the semi finals.

The semi’s proved to be too much for the Canadian side as they met the might Laos.  Laos had only lost one match prior to meeting Canada coming out of the group of death.  Laos put Canada on their heels almost the entire game going 3-0 with only 15 minutes left in the game.  Kirk O’Dooley and Jared Hunt got two late goals to give the crowd a glimmer of hope but it wasn’t enough.  Canada would be out of the gold medal match and would face France in the consolation match.

This match would not be a pretty one as Kirk O’Dooley; a striker for Canada would be place in net as their regular keeper would be missing for this match.   France took advantage and scored some amazing goals, and taking this game to a 5-1 victory.  Canada would have to settle with 4th.

After the head coach stepped down and Canada found Tim Caleval, the team was put together from a majority of premier league players playing in the Regina soccer community.  Most of the players both played with or against and therefore needed some time to gel.  After speaking with the manager, his thoughts were positive about the outcome and said they would be back even stronger next year and would take a serious run at the cup, as their goal now was not just to make it out of the group match but to be in the final
